Three separate policies hide behind that one symptom. Licensing and regulation: OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google each publish a list of supported countries, and the first — sometimes only — check is where your IP says you are; connect from outside the list and the service isn’t served, regardless of who you are. No, and the distinction is worth thirty seconds. An LLM proxy or AI gateway (LiteLLM, OpenRouter, Portkey, and similar) is software that sits between your application and model providers — it routes requests across models, counts tokens, caches completions, and manages API keys. What we sell is one layer lower: network proxy servers — IP addresses your traffic exits from, speaking HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4, and SOCKS5. The two solve different problems and stack cleanly: a gateway decides which model gets the request, our proxy determines which network address it arrives from. If you searched for token accounting and model routing, you need the software category; if a provider's regional policy or IP scoring is what's in your way, that's the problem this page addresses.
Because those systems score the address, not the people. A typical trigger set: many accounts on one office IP (looks like a farm), a VPN exit shared with strangers whose behavior you inherit, an ISP that rotates your public address every reconnect (reads as country- or city-jumping), and browser automation running on the same network. Any of these can push the shared IP over the risk threshold — and then everyone behind it sees the banner. The unwind is to stop sharing your reputation with strangers: give the team a dedicated address (or a few, splitting accounts into small groups), keep it static, and route AI traffic through it consistently. The flag rate drops because the risk model finally sees the thing it's built to reward — a stable address with a coherent usage pattern.
Technically it routes your traffic out of an IP in a supported country — that part works. The part we'd rather you read before paying: most AI providers' terms treat circumventing regional restrictions as a violation, and OpenAI has suspended accounts accessed from unsupported territories through VPNs and proxies. So the honest framing is risk management, not a loophole: a dedicated static address in one supported country, used by one account with payment details that don't contradict it, is a materially different risk profile from a shared VPN hopping exits — but the residual risk is yours, and no proxy provider can remove it. Where this setup is entirely uncontroversial: travelers keeping a home-country IP on the road, and teams whose corporate network sits behind a flagged range.
Marginally, and usually invisibly against how LLMs spend time. A proxy adds one network hop — typically 5–30 ms on our infrastructure, with up to 500 Mbps per proxy — while an LLM completion spends hundreds to thousands of milliseconds in inference before the first token appears. Streaming works normally: both HTTP proxying and SOCKS5 tunnel server-sent events without buffering the stream. The one geometry to avoid is a proxy on the wrong continent — routing Frankfurt-to-Frankfurt API calls through Dallas adds two ocean crossings for nothing, so pick an address near either your servers or the provider's endpoints. For interactive chatbot use, the added hop is far below human perception.
