How to run Copilot through a proxy

GitHub Copilot is one of the few AI tools with first-class, documented proxy support, so this is configuration, not hacking. In VS Code, set http.proxy in your settings — credentials go straight into the URL, http://login:password@IP:port — and the Copilot extension follows it. JetBrains IDEs take the same address in their global proxy settings. Visual Studio is the quirky one: it reads the proxy from Windows but won’t pick up credentials from there, so authenticated proxies need the COPILOT_USE_DEFAULTPROXY environment variable or a whitelist setup where your IP authenticates itself. A proxy for Copilot CLI and API traffic is even simpler — both respect the standard HTTPS_PROXY variable your shell already understands.

One distinction saves most of the debugging time: there are two different “proxies” in a Copilot setup, and they fail differently. A corporate gateway inspects TLS — it substitutes certificates, which is exactly what Copilot’s error messages complain about (more on that in the FAQ). Our proxy does the opposite: a plain CONNECT tunnel that passes GitHub’s own certificates through untouched, so the connection Copilot sees is byte-for-byte the one GitHub served. Nothing to install in your trust store, no proxyStrictSSL to switch off, none of the security trade-offs that flag advice usually carries.

The reason to want a dedicated address is the account behind the tool. Copilot rides on your GitHub identity — repos, tokens, years of contribution history — and GitHub’s anti-fraud watches login geography the way every platform in this cluster does: an address that jumps between countries invites re-verification; a stable one doesn’t. One IP for your IDE, terminal, and CI keeps that identity coherent. How GitHub’s posture compares to ChatGPT, Claude, and the rest is mapped on our Proxies for AI Tools page.

The same address goes into VS Code's http.proxy, your JetBrains settings, and the HTTPS_PROXY variable for the CLI. Copy the example for your stack, or paste it into your AI coding assistant to adapt.

# HTTP or HTTPS proxy

I use proxies for online games. I have been using the service for many months and I am satisfied with the quality and efficiency. Proxies work as they should and there are practically no disconnects. I recommend it, you will not regret it!

FD Felix Drechsler July 2025

Like the service! Responsive and fast support, affordable prices, convenient renewal panel and network selection. Just what I need!

KV Kornev Vitalii February 2026

If you need to buy proxies at an affordable price, this is the best choice. I became a client of the service half a year ago. The cost is adequate, technical support always tries to help, and most importantly, you can use proxies without a password and login!

JR Jack rony December 2024

I used the service for social networking. At first I bought it for a month, but now I will definitely renew it because the quality is really good! I am very glad that I finally found a really cool service!

Is Microsoft 365 Copilot the same thing?

No — Microsoft attached the Copilot name to several unrelated products, and the network story differs for each. This page is about GitHub Copilot, the coding assistant in your IDE and terminal, which runs under your personal or organization GitHub account and happily follows the proxy settings described above. Microsoft 365 Copilot lives inside Word, Excel, and Teams under a corporate tenant: its connectivity is managed by your Microsoft 365 administrator against Microsoft's published endpoint lists, and a personal proxy has no useful role there. Windows Copilot is a third thing again — an OS feature following system network settings.

Quick test: if your Copilot autocompletes code, you're in the right place.

Will this work behind my corporate firewall?

Honestly: it depends on the firewall, and we'd rather say so upfront. Our proxy is an external dedicated address — for Copilot to use it, your machine must be able to open outbound CONNECT tunnels to it, and locked-down corporate networks often permit that only to approved hosts. If the network forces all traffic through its own gateway, your traffic to us goes through it too, and its policies still apply. That's physics, not something any proxy vendor can wave away.

In practice there are two clean setups: networks that allow outbound proxy connections (most mid-size companies) — just configure the address and go; and BYOD or remote-work machines outside the inspection perimeter, where the dedicated address works unconditionally. If you're on a hard-locked network, the conversation you need is with IT about allowlisting one host — a smaller ask than exempting all of GitHub.

How do I fix “self-signed certificate in certificate chain”?

First understand what it's telling you: something between VS Code and GitHub replaced the TLS certificate. That's the signature of corporate SSL inspection — the gateway breaks open HTTPS, re-signs it with the company's private CA, and Copilot's Node.js runtime, which doesn't automatically trust desktop certificate stores, refuses the forgery. The clean fixes are making the runtime trust that CA (the win-ca extension in append mode on Windows, or NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS pointing at the corporate root) — not setting http.proxyStrictSSL: false, which switches off certificate checking for everything.

If the error appeared while using a third-party proxy service, draw the opposite conclusion: that service is intercepting your TLS, and your GitHub tokens transit it in cleartext. A Copilot proxy done right is a blind tunnel — GitHub's certificate arrives untouched, and this error never fires. That's worth verifying before you trust any proxy with a developer account.

How do I route the Copilot CLI and API calls in CI?

Both follow the same convention as every well-behaved terminal tool: set HTTPS_PROXY=http://login:password@IP:port in the environment, and the Copilot CLI, gh, and API clients route through it — in a CI runner that's one line in the job's env block. If your pipeline talks to a Copilot API proxy endpoint at volume, give the runner its own datacenter IP rather than borrowing your personal address: separate identity per environment, and a $3.50 dedicated IP is cheaper than untangling why your laptop's address suddenly looks like a build farm.

One scoping note: the environment variable is process-level, so it applies to everything the job runs. If only Copilot should use the proxy, set the variable in the specific step that calls it rather than globally.
